Illness Returns

A Warning Reappears
Symptoms on the voyage
Michael’s mother has suffered abdominal cramps at earlier stages of the journey. In Australia, she finally sees a doctor, who thinks something she ate may have caused the problem, and she seems to improve.
Reassurance proves temporary
The family resumes its plans, but the earlier illness has not vanished from the story. After leaving Sydney, her symptoms return much more severely, weakening the person responsible for navigating the boat.
The Coral Sea Storms

A Voyage Under Strain
Northward in bad weather
Storm after storm drives the Peggy Sue farther north across the Coral Sea. The rudder cable snaps, self-steering fails, and someone must remain at the wheel while the vessel’s position becomes uncertain.
The skipper cannot steer
Michael’s mother is too sick to work the charts and can barely eat. His father and Michael attempt the navigation, but their exhaustion and limited knowledge make the yacht increasingly vulnerable.
The Night Before Twelve

Michael Goes Overboard
A fatal distraction
While his parents sleep, Michael is steering with Eddie’s ball nearby. Stella barks at the bow without her harness; when Michael leaves the wheel to bring her in, a sudden turn throws him into the sea.
The voyage disappears
The lights of the Peggy Sue vanish into darkness. Michael clings to the ball, loses hope of rescue, and eventually dreams that someone has hauled him aboard. He wakes instead on an island with Stella beside him.
